Young Girl Rejected By Catholic School For Refusing To Shave Her Hair
A form one student failed to join a Catholic sponsored school in Kisumu West on Tuesday, January 9, after she refused to shave her hair as required by the school. Her long hair was the only impediment as she had complied with all the other requirements before she could be admitted to St Mark Obambo Secondary School.
The girl identified as Sharon Akinyi maintained that she could not betray her faith citing that women are allowed to have long hair as it is considered their covering.
It is not the first time that the school has hit headlines by effecting this hair policy when it suspended a form four student in 2014 for having long hair. The student was among three others but she did not shave hers after her parents’ church pastor and education officials were involved and at the moment, she is working as a nurse, according to reports by the Standard.
A teacher at the school said that the policy does not seek to discriminate or victimise but it is because of the high temperatures and dust.
