The Rivers state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr Austin Tam-George while appearing on Rhythm 93.7 fm Port-Harcourt’s news and current affairs Programme ” Viewpoint” has said that the Rivers Chapter of the All Progressives Congress [APC] has no moral justification to criticize the decision of Governor Nyesom Wike to seek bank loans for the development of the state.
He said this in support of the Governor even as he reiterated that loans taken by the Governor are tied to specific verifiable projects and have a proper repayment plan.
Dr Austin Tam-George went on to list Governor Wike’s achievements which include empowering thirty five thousand small and medium scale business owners in the state with the two billion naira credit facility secured from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Responding on the governments borrowing activities he insisted that, the Rivers State government is not on a borrowing spree but has no choice because it met an empty treasury and arrears of unpaid salaries and pensions.
The Rivers State Government is also accusing former Governor and the current Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi of embezzling N3trn of Rivers state funds in the eight years he spent in office. Meanwhile the All Progressives Congress Rivers State chapter has taken umbrage at statements credited to Dr Austin Tam-George that the Amaechi administration obtained four billion naira agricultural loan from their Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN and directed the Commissioner to seek evidence of his claims from the apex bank.
