JOHANNESBURG – The family of the late award-winning Kwaito legend Mandoza says he died an honourable death.
The family held a briefing at the Soweto Theatre earlier today, after the musician’s passing yesterday afternoon.
Mduduzi Edmund Tshabalala, also known as Mandoza, was a South African kwaito musician with numerous hits to his belt, the Nkalakatha hit maker died upon arrival in hospital after his yearlong battle with cancer..
The Kwaito legend discovered his cancer had re-occurred seven weeks ago and he started chemotherapy last week.
His family says the musician was determined to beat the cancer even insisting on performing at a concert just last week, despite his deteriorating condition.
But his health took a turn for the worst yesterday and he was rushed to a nearby hospital.
He died just minutes after arriving at the facility in the arms of both his mother and his managers.
His manager, Kevin Ntaopane, says Mandoza wanted to spend his last days surrounded by his family and doing what he loved most: making music.
The musician will be buried on Saturday; the same day he was meant to perform at a Kwaito tribute concert.
