About Donald Trump’s Meeting With Kanye West

President-elect Donald Trump recently postponed a press conference he was scheduled to give on his vast conflicts of interest on December 15, stating that he was simply too busy. But this morning, Trump managed to fit in a brief meeting with rapper Kanye West.

The press and the Internet understandably went wild at the sight of West strolling into the golden lobby of Trump Tower. It was simply too juicy a story. West had recently suffered what appeared to be a very public mental breakdown and was subsequently hospitalized in Los Angeles for more than a week. Instead of resting at home and focusing on his recovery, he’s spotted meeting our incoming president, who’s in the middle of choosing our country’s next administration. Unsurprisingly, the two even stopped and posed for a photo op some 30 minutes later.

But please, America, we urge you. Don’t fall for this! Don’t be distracted by the stunt meeting of two Twitter-addicted megalomaniacs! You know what we should all be paying attention to instead? Pretty much everything else that took place this morning.

For starters, Rex Tillerson, Exxon’s CEO, has officially been selected as our next secretary of state. Tillerson is a highly controversial choice for the top diplomatic role, given his cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin, who awarded Tillerson with an Order of Friendship medal in 2013. Tillerson’s appointment has also raised eyebrows in Washington (from both Republicans and Democrats) because of his potential conflicts of interests with Russia. Tillerson’s employer, Exxon, reportedly stands to make billions if U.S. sanctions against Russia (enacted after its aggressive intervention in Ukraine) are lifted.

Oh, and speaking of Putin, there’s the matter of Russia’s meddling in our election to worry about, too. While Trump vehemently refuses to accept the CIA’s findings, Republican leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan have said they support government investigations into the Russian election tampering allegations.

This morning, Trump also appointed Rick Perry as his secretary of energy. He’s the ex-governor of Texas who once forgot the name of the very department he’s now been chosen to run during a 2011 presidential debate. That episode cost him his 2012 presidential bid but apparently was not enough to disqualify him from being chosen to head the department. Neither was his brief stint on Dancing With the Stars. Perry’s predecessors include two physicists, one of whom has won a Nobel Prize. As someone on Twitter sardonically pointed out: “You won’t find a better summation of the Obama-Trump transition than a nuclear physicist being replaced by a Dancing With the Stars washout.”

Add to this list the siege on the Syrian city of Aleppo, where journalists and others have been sending out their final goodbyes on Twitter; Trump’s refusal to take daily security briefings; and his now-postponed press conference on his potential conflicts of interest around the world. Trump’s attention-grabbing meeting with West is nothing more than a game of smoke and mirrors. We should know better than to fall for it.
