A notorious armed robbery gang terrorising the people and residents of Okigwe town in the Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State and its environs were on Wednesday shot dead by the operatives of the state police command.

The incident occurred at the ever-busy Okigwe – Enugu expressway.

Sources said the gangsters, who were robbing travellers, especially women going to an early morning market, engaged the police in a gun battle.

An indigene of the area, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday on the condition of anonymity, said the gunmen on sighting the policemen swiftly opened fire on them.

He said the three armed men were killed by the gunshots fired at them by the policemen who arrived the robbery scene following a distress call from a resident.

When contacted, the Transition Committee Chairman of the Okigwe LGA, Sunny Chiadi, confirmed the robbery attack to our correspondent.

He said that the dead gunmen had been on the wanted list of the security operatives, owing to their criminal activities in and around the area.

He identified the leader of the gang simply as Shabba who was believed to had been operating with mystical powers before he and his other gang members were murdered.

Chiadi, disclosed that exhibits, such as guns were recovered from the dead Armed robbers.

Efforts made to get the comments of the state police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to reply to the text message Sent to his mobile phone number as of the time of filing this report.
